About Macau

Macau, also spelled as Macao, is officially known as the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. It is located on the southeastern coast of China, near the Pearl River Delta, and has an area of just 32.9 square kilometers. The region is the most densely populated region in the world and its residents are primarily of Chinese descent, though there is also a significant Portuguese minority due to its colonial history. Macau was a Portuguese territory for 442 years, until 1999, when sovereignty was transferred to China. Macau is also known for its unique blend of Portuguese and Chinese influences in its culture, architecture, and cuisine, which has led to its historic center being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Despite its small size, the region is one of the world's wealthiest, with one of the highest per capita incomes and one of the highest life expectancies.
