Benin, officially the Republic of Benin, is a West African nation known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse history. Bordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north, it spans an area of around 114,763 square kilometers and has a population of over 11 million. Porto-Novo is its official capital, but Cotonou is its largest city and economic hub. The historical significance of the area is notable, particularly as a major center of the African slave trade in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, the country stands as a stable democracy, having undergone peaceful transitions of power since 1991.
