About Gabon
Gabon, or the Gabonese Republic, is a beacon of relative stability in Central Africa. Located on the equator, it's bordered by Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, and the Republic of Congo, with a significant portion of its western boundary graced by the Atlantic Ocean. The country is roughly the size of the United Kingdom, covering an area of around 267,667 square kilometers. Gabon's population of approximately two million is relatively sparse, due to vast swathes of unspoiled wilderness and one of Africa's largest urban-rural divides. Libreville, the vibrant capital and largest city, boasts colonial-era architecture and modern high-rises. Gabon's well-preserved natural environment is a key highlight. The country boasts more than 13 national parks, occupying about 10% of its total land area, which protect diverse ecosystems, from rainforests to savannahs, teeming with unique wildlife such as forest elephants, gorillas, and a wide range of bird species. Gabon's economic backbone is its oil reserves, but it's striving to reduce its reliance on oil by diversifying into sectors such as tourism, mining, and forestry. Gabonese culture is rich, characterized by diverse ethnic groups with distinct traditions, languages, and arts. The Fang people are the largest ethnic group, and French is the official language. Gabon's music is a blend of traditional and modern styles, with Punu music and dance particularly well-known.
