About Albania
Albania, officially known as the Republic of Albania, is located in Southeastern Europe. Nestled in the Western Balkans, it is bordered by Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, North Macedonia to the east, and Greece to the south and southeast. Its western coast is on the Adriatic Sea, while to the southwest it borders the Ionian Sea. Tirana, the country's vibrant capital and largest city, is the heart of Albania's cultural, economic, and governmental activity. Albania has a rich historical and cultural heritage, influenced by numerous civilizations such as the Illyrians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and more recently, the Italians. The Albanian language is the official language and is an Indo-European language with its own branch, distinct from other languages. The country is primarily Muslim, but there is also a significant Christian minority. Albania offers varied geography within a small area: from snow-capped mountains and rolling hills to warm beaches along its Riviera. It has one of Europe's largest onshore oil reserves and its scenery, historical sites, vibrant culture, and natural beauty make it an upcoming tourist destination. The Albanian economy is characterized by a private sector that accounts for more than 85% of GDP, although the energy and transportation infrastructure is still developing. The country is known for its commitment to environmental protection and biodiversity, with three national parks and several reserves.
