About Bahrain
Bahrain, formally the Kingdom of Bahrain, is an island nation in the Arabian Gulf. It is situated between the Qatar peninsula and the north eastern coast of Saudi Arabia. Manama is its capital and largest city, functioning as a financial hub in the Middle East. Bahrain was one of the earliest areas to convert to Islam, in 628 CE. Its population is around 1.5 million, with Bahraini citizens making up slightly less than half. Arabic is the official language, though English is widely spoken and understood. Bahrain is known for its oil and pearls. The country's economy, once heavily dependent on oil, has diversified, and now has a strongly growing banking and tourism sector. Bahrain has a rich history of arts and crafts, and the Bahrain International Circuit has hosted the Formula One Grand Prix every year since 2004. The Kingdom is also known for its progressive human rights policies, being one of the first Gulf states to give women the vote. Bahrain, despite being an Islamic country, is very liberal and is known for its tolerance towards the practice of other faiths. The country has a high Human Development Index and is recognized by the World Bank as a high income economy.
