About Christmas island
Christmas Island, officially known as the Territory of Christmas Island, is an Australian external territory located in the Indian Ocean, lying south of Java, Indonesia. The island was named Christmas Island because it was discovered on Christmas Day in 1643 by the British Captain William Mynors. Spanning a total area of about 135 square kilometers, the island is noted for its unique biodiversity. The lush tropical rainforests that blanket most of the island are home to a wide array of endemic species, including the famous red crab, which every year performs a spectacular mass migration to the sea. Apart from its biodiversity, the island is also renowned for its phosphate deposits, a mineral used in fertilizer production. The majority of the island's approximately 1,800 residents live in settlements on the northern tip of the island. Despite its small population, the island is rich in cultural diversity, with people of Chinese, Malay, and European descent. The official language is English, but other languages like Chinese and Malay are also spoken. Given its unique biodiversity, the island is a haven for nature enthusiasts and researchers, with opportunities for bird watching, snorkeling, and exploring the rainforest. Additionally, it is also a significant site for studying ecology and conservation.
