About Dominica
Dominica, officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is a mountainous island nation located in the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Eastern Caribbean Sea. It should not be confused with the Dominican Republic, which is a separate country. Known as 'The Nature Island,' Dominica is characterized by lush greenery, diverse wildlife, and stunning natural features, including the world's second-largest hot spring, the Boiling Lake, and the spectacular Trafalgar Falls. The island nation is relatively undeveloped, preserving much of its natural beauty, which contributes to its allure for nature enthusiasts, hikers, divers, and bird watchers. Dominica is the only island in the Eastern Caribbean to retain some of its pre-Columbian population—the Kalinago—who were the island's first known inhabitants. This has contributed to a rich cultural diversity, reflected in local customs, cuisine, and the annual carnival. The capital city, Roseau, showcases charming colonial architecture alongside vibrant local markets. English is the official language, although a French-based Creole is also widely spoken. The economy depends heavily on agriculture, with bananas as the primary export, and increasingly on tourism and offshore banking. Dominica's eco-tourism efforts have sought to protect its unique ecosystems and biodiversity, earning it a reputation as one of the world's prime eco-tourism destinations.
