About Ireland
Ireland, known as Éire in Irish, is an island nation located in Northwestern Europe. To its east is the larger island of Great Britain, from which it's separated by the Irish Sea. The Republic of Ireland occupies most of the island, while a portion of it, known as Northern Ireland, is part of the United Kingdom. Ireland's capital and largest city is Dublin. The nation covers an area of about 70,273 square kilometres and has a population of around 5 million. Its stunning landscapes encompass lush vegetation, earning it the nickname 'the Emerald Isle.' The Irish are well-known for their rich culture, particularly in music, dance, literature, and folklore, with the famous St. Patrick's Day parades celebrated worldwide. Ireland has two official languages, English and Irish (Gaeilge), though English is more widely spoken. The country has a mixed economy, with sectors such as technology, pharmaceuticals, and services playing significant roles. Ireland is also globally recognized for its contributions to higher education, with some of its universities ranked amongst the best in the world. The country has a complex history, notably its long-standing relationship with Britain, with key events such as the Great Famine and the Irish fight for independence shaping its course.
