About Lithuania
Lithuania, officially known as the Republic of Lithuania, is a country located in the Baltic region of Europe. It is one of three Baltic states and lies on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea. Lithuania shares land borders with Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the south, and Russia to the southwest. Lithuania covers an area of 65,300 square kilometers and has a population of about 2.8 million people. Its capital and largest city is Vilnius, recognized for its medieval old town, baroque architecture, and its historic role as the Lithuanian capital during the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Lithuania has a rich history, once being the largest state in Europe in the 14th century and later forming a crucial part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The country declared independence in 1918, was occupied by the Soviet Union during World War II, and regained its independence in 1990 as the Soviet Union collapsed. Lithuania became a member of NATO and the European Union in 2004. The country has a diverse economy with strengths in technology, manufacturing, and tourism, and it ranks well globally in terms of human development, civil liberties, press freedom, and ease of doing business.
