About Rwanda

Rwanda, known as the 'land of a thousand hills', is a landlocked country located in the Great Rift Valley where the African Great Lakes region and East Africa converge. Among the smallest countries on the African mainland, its capital city is Kigali. With approximately 13 million inhabitants, Rwanda's high density population lives amid breathtaking scenery. The official languages are Kinyarwanda, French, and English, with Swahili used in commercial and administrative contexts. In 1994, the country suffered one of the most brutal genocides in history, leading to a tragic loss of life and massive displacement. However, in the years since, Rwanda has made an impressive turnaround. Its recovery and development have been praised, demonstrating resilience, unity, and reconciliation. The country is governed under a presidential system with strong focus on anti-corruption measures. Economically, Rwanda relies heavily on subsistence agriculture, with coffee and tea as main cash crops. A burgeoning tourism sector is also significant, particularly wildlife safaris and the renowned Volcanoes National Park, home to rare mountain gorillas. Rwanda has gained global recognition for its commitment to gender equality and has the highest number of female parliamentarians worldwide. In recent years, it has also made significant progress in sectors such as technology, education, and healthcare, making it a rising star in the region.
