About Yemen
Yemen, officially known as the Republic of Yemen, is a country located on the southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north and Oman to the northeast, while it has maritime borders in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. Yemen is the second-largest country in the peninsula, covering a total area of approximately 527,970 square kilometers. The country has a highly varied topography with coastal plains, vast deserts, and high mountain ranges including the Haraz Mountains. Sana'a, Yemen's capital, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The country is known for its rich and ancient history that dates back to the first millennium BC, including the famed Sabaean civilization, renowned for the legendary Queen of Sheba. Yemeni culture is deeply rooted in Arab traditions and Islamic principles, with Yemen being one of the oldest centers of civilization in the Near East. Yemen's economy has historically been based on agriculture, with coffee and khat being significant crops, and fisheries along its long coastline. However, the discovery of oil fields in the 1980s shifted the economic base, and the oil sector now represents about 90% of its export earnings. Yemen also boasts UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the historic towns of Zabid and Shibam. Unfortunately, in recent years, Yemen has been plagued by civil conflict, which has led to a severe humanitarian crisis. Despite these challenges, the resilience and spirit of the Yemeni people continue to shine through.
