About Namibia
Namibia, formally known as the Republic of Namibia, is a country in Southern Africa known for its diverse ecology and natural beauty. The country shares its borders with Angola and Zambia in the north, Botswana in the east, and South Africa in the south and southeast, while the Atlantic Ocean forms its western coastline. The country gets its name from the Namib Desert, one of the oldest and largest deserts in the world, that stretches along the entire coastline. The capital and largest city, Windhoek, is nestled in the heart of the country, serving as the commercial hub of the nation. Namibia's economy is anchored on mining for gem-quality diamonds, metal ores, and minerals; agriculture; manufacturing; and tourism. The country boasts a rich cultural heritage, with diverse ethnic groups including the Ovambo, Damara, Nama, and Herero. The population is largely Christian, and English, which was introduced during the South African mandate after World War I, is the official language. The country gained independence from South Africa in 1990 and has since maintained a stable multiparty parliamentary democracy. The landscape is characterised by five geographical areas, the Central Plateau, the Namib Desert, the Great Escarpment, the Bushveld, and the Kalahari Desert, each home to distinct ecological life and awe-inspiring landscapes.
