About Paraguay
Paraguay, officially known as the Republic of Paraguay, is a landlocked country located in the heart of South America. Covering an area of around 406,752 square kilometers, it is bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. As of 2023, Paraguay has a population of approximately 7 million. The nation is divided into two distinct geographical regions by the Paraguay River: the eastern Paraná region, characterized by lush, rolling hills and subtropical forests; and the western Gran Chaco, a vast, semi-arid plain. Paraguay's capital and most populous city is Asunción, situated on the banks of the Paraguay River. The country's history was dominated by a long period of dictatorship, but it has been a democracy since 1989. Today, Paraguay's economy relies on agriculture, particularly the cultivation of soybeans and cotton, livestock, and small-scale industries. Despite some challenges, such as poverty and social inequality, Paraguay is known for its rich culture, particularly in the fields of music and dance, with styles like the lively Polka Paraguaya and the traditional Paraguayan dance, the Paraguaya. With its scenic beauty and warm, welcoming people, Paraguay offers visitors an off-the-beaten-path experience in South America.
