About Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan is a landlocked country situated in Central Asia. It shares borders with Kazakhstan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north and northeast, Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south and southwest, and the Caspian Sea to the west. Covering approximately 491,210 square kilometers, Turkmenistan is the world's 52nd largest country. The country has a population of about 6 million people. Its capital and largest city is Ashgabat. The official language is Turkmen, and the predominant religion is Islam. Turkmenistan possesses the world's fourth-largest reserves of natural gas and substantial oil resources. The economy is heavily state-controlled, and while significant progress has been made in creating market structures, it remains dominated by the energy and agricultural sectors. Turkmenistan's rich cultural heritage, largely derived from the traditions of Turkic-speaking nomadic tribes, is visible in its music, dance, and visual arts. Turkmen rugs, with their distinctive red and burgundy hues and geometric patterns, are world-renowned. The country has an authoritarian political system and is often criticized for its human rights record. Despite this, it maintains a position of neutrality in international relations and is a member of the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
