About Ukraine
Ukraine, a place of natural beauty and vibrant culture, stands as the largest country in Europe, excluding Russia. The country sits in Eastern Europe, boasting a diverse landscape that ranges from the sunflower-filled plains in the heart of the continent to the craggy, snow-topped Carpathian mountains and the serene beaches along the coastline of the Black Sea. Ukraine's borders encompass seven neighboring countries, including Russia to the east, and several EU nations to the west, emphasizing its geopolitical importance and diverse influences. Ukraine is drenched in history that stretches back to the 9th century with the state of Kyivan Rus, which laid much of the groundwork for Slavic cultures. Its tumultuous history includes periods of independence interspersed with rule by Mongols, Lithuanians, Poles, Turks, Austrians and, most recently, the Soviet Union. Since its independence in 1991, Ukraine has been forging its own path towards a democratic society and market economy, despite challenges including economic issues, political turmoil, and conflicts with Russia. The population is predominantly ethnic Ukrainian, with a significant Russian minority, and the official language is Ukrainian. The nation is known for its deep artistic traditions, which include literature, music, and visual arts. Its iconic orthodox architecture, particularly the golden-domed churches, is one of the most recognized symbols of Ukrainian cultural identity.
