About Finland

Finland, officially known as the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country situated in Northern Europe. It is bordered by Sweden to the northwest, Norway to the north, and Russia to the east, while the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland outline its extensive coastline. Covering an area of 338,455 square kilometers, the country is populated by around 5.6 million people, a majority of whom are ethnic Finns. The country's capital and most populous city is Helsinki, a vibrant metropolis with a cosmopolitan flair. Finnish and Swedish are the official languages of Finland, with Finnish spoken by the majority. Finland is often recognized for its numerous lakes, over 188,000 in total, as well as for its thick forests that cover 74% of the country's land area, making it the most densely forested country in Europe. The Finnish economy, characterized by a high standard of living, is a mix of a welfare state and a highly industrialized free-market, heavily oriented toward foreign trade. Finland is one of the world’s wealthiest nations, with a nominal per-capita income higher than the OECD average. It is also globally recognized for its commitment to civil liberties, quality of life, and the highest standard of education, consistently ranking high in the global PISA surveys. A remarkable event in the history of the country is its achievement of independence from Russia in 1917. Today, it is a member of several international bodies including the United Nations, the European Union, and the Eurozone, among others.
