About Turkey

Turkey, officially known as the Republic of Turkey, is a transcontinental country, straddling both Europe and Asia. It has a rich and complex history, with influences from the Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires. It shares borders with eight countries: Greece and Bulgaria to the northwest, Georgia to the northeast, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran to the east, and Iraq and Syria to the south. It is encircled by seas on three sides: the Aegean Sea is to the west, the Black Sea to the north, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Istanbul, its largest city, bridges the continents of Europe and Asia and is a vibrant metropolis with historic sites such as the iconic Hagia Sophia and the bustling Grand Bazaar. The country's capital, Ankara, is located in the heartland of the country and is the second-largest city after Istanbul. Turkish is the official language and Islam is the dominant religion. Turkey's cuisine is world-renowned, with dishes like baklava, doner kebab, and Turkish tea being widely appreciated. Its economy is classified as an emerging market and is the world's 20th-largest by nominal GDP. Turkey is a member of the G20, an organization of the world's largest economies. It also maintains membership in NATO, the UN, and the Council of Europe, but negotiations for full EU membership have been ongoing since 1987. Turkey's geography, climate, and location give it a diverse array of landscapes, including the limestone terraces of Pamukkale, the unique 'fairy chimneys' in Cappadocia, and the stunning beaches of its Aegean and Mediterranean coasts.
